SpaceShot — The Vertical Thrill Ride

🚀

One second you’re sitting calmly in a seat. The next, compressed air launches you 50+ feet straight up at 4Gs of force and your stomach is somewhere near your ankles. SpaceShot is the kind of ride that makes you question your life choices mid-launch — and then immediately want to go again.

How SpaceShot Works

Unlike traditional roller coasters that build speed gradually, SpaceShot uses compressed air to launch riders vertically from a standing start. The acceleration is instant — zero to 45+ mph in under two seconds. At the top of the tower, there’s a brief moment of weightlessness before gravity pulls you back down, and pneumatic brakes slow the descent in controlled bounces.

The technology was developed by S&S Worldwide, and the towers range from compact indoor versions (30–40 feet) to massive outdoor installations topping 200 feet. Indoor entertainment center versions are smaller but still deliver a serious jolt.

What to Expect

  1. Loading: You sit in a seat mounted around a central tower and get secured with an over-the-shoulder restraint and seat belt.
  2. Countdown: Some versions have a countdown, others just fire without warning. The surprise launch is honestly better — less time to overthink.
  3. Launch: The air blast pushes you up the tower in about 1.5 seconds. The force pushes you into your seat hard.
  4. Peak: At the top, you experience a half-second of near-weightlessness. This is where the screaming peaks.
  5. Descent: You drop back down, and the braking system catches you in a series of diminishing bounces before returning to the starting position.

Tips for First-Timers

  • Empty your pockets. Phones, keys, loose change — anything not secured will try to achieve orbit. Most rides have a cubby or bin near the loading area.
  • Hold onto the restraints. Keep your hands on the handles, not flailing in the air. Looks cool in theory, hurts in practice when your arms snap back down.
  • Don’t eat a full meal right before. A light snack is fine. A large pizza is a gamble you’ll lose.
  • Breathe out during launch. Holding your breath tenses everything and makes the G-force feel worse. Exhale as you launch and the experience is smoother.

Is It Actually Scary?

Honestly? The anticipation is worse than the ride. The actual launch lasts about 3 seconds, the weightlessness is a brief thrill, and the descent is controlled. Total ride time is under 30 seconds. It’s an intense burst of adrenaline followed by the immediate urge to do it again. Most first-timers who looked terrified in line end up grinning when it’s over.
